Coventry History

A section on the history of Coventry

Coventry, just like any other city in England, has a grim side to its history. Many people have died here of natural and traumatic causes. Many have also died because it was decided they should.

Coventry a thousand years ago was a very different place. It was no more than a hamlet of a few scattered dwellings. And yet, just some three of four hundred years later,  it was reckoned to be the fourth city in England after London, Bristol and York.

The wealth of the city was built on wool and woollen trade both at home in England and abroad. Such was the wealth of the city and the confidence that surrounding it the City fathers decided to encircle the city with a wall. With this wealth came all the trappings of success, tradesmen, monasteries and fine buildings.

The history of the city has since those times seen many changes. History tells how we got from wooden ploughs in a small hamlet to jet engines in a large metropolitan city.
