Buildings and Places.
History has touched this city in many ways, politically and commercially, and these pages try to give a flavour of those events as portrayed in the buildings left to us by history.
The history of most cities is evident in the buildings that remain from early days. Remembering of course Coventry has been inhabited for over 1000yrs, and most of those original buildings are now entirely gone. Nevertheless the life of Coventry is still evident in the structures or part structures that remain.
Over the years many questions have been asked of these pages including…
- Why is Coventry so called?
- Were the Romans ever here?
- Why was the wall built around Coventry and when was it knocked down?
- Were any old buildings remaining in the city after the German Blitz?
These and many more questions are answered in this section. There is a lot of information on many of the old buildings in this section including the history revolving around their life over the centuries and the importance they would have had in their heyday.
Many Kings and Queens have visited Coventry over the centuries including Elizabeth.I have stayed at Hale's place, the old Whitefriars buildings -which Elizabeth described as "commodious".
